A message from Lisa Christensen, Director of Children’s Services
“Schools have a pivotal role to play in ensuring life opportunities are available to all and in helping all members of their school community appreciate that diversity in all respects (e.g. gender, age, race, sexuality, disability etc.) is enriching. We have seen over recent years the demographics of Norfolk changing and many of our schools have seen these changes reflected in their own populations and communities. Through promoting equality and community cohesion within schools we can raise awareness of the diverse cultures that now make up British society. It is important that we all learn about each other so that wherever our future professional and personal lives takes us, we have developed a sense of respect, curiosity and integrity about those who are different from ourselves. We must also ensure that our differences do not become barriers to participation, access, learning and employment and therefore we must acknowledge that we cannot achieve equality for all by treating everyone the same – but by identifying and meeting the varying needs of individuals and groups. The purpose of these equalities and diversity intranet pages is to support Norfolk schools in promoting equality and so ensure that challenging discrimination and the promotion of inclusive practice is a central component of every school’s ethos.” These pages are managed by the Children’s Services Equality team members.
