Children at risk of exclusion

An exclusion is a traumatic event in a child's life; it can bring about feelings of confusion, rejection, fear and uncertainty.  Exclusion must be a last resort and it must be lawful, reasonable, proportionate and fair.  Our priority is to help pupils stay engaged and succeed in school by addressing challenges early.  Before considering exclusion, schools must take steps to promote the use of effective strategies earlier so that exclusion risks are reduced and avoided wherever possible.  Our Inclusion Advisor team work with schools to prevent an exclusion wherever possible by:

  • Ensuring reasonable adjustments are considered.
  • Supporting schools to engage in the right support services.
  • Exploring alternatives to exclusions, including direction off-site or managed moves.

Call 0333 3137165 to get in touch with one of our advisors, who can offer support to schools and families.  The phone line is open on weekdays, from 9am to 5pm.  For more information visit the SEND Local Offer.
