Attendance - The Governors Role

Course description:

Improving attendance requires constant focus and high expectations from a whole school perspective. As governors we recognise the importance of pupils being in school and this will be promoted in our polices, ethos, our strategy and examining data supported by asking the right questions of school leaders. Some pupils find it harder than others to attend school and therefore at all stages of improving attendance, schools and partners should work with pupils and parents to remove any barriers to attendance. This session examines the specific roles that governors play in attendance as well as provide resources and tools to support governors in their settings.

By the end of the session governors will:

  • Understand the schools and governance expectation and duties around attendance
  • Know the questions that boards need to ask to support improved attendance at their school
  • Gain awareness of the latest DfE guidance on attendance
