KS1 Reading Fluency Project pilot autumn 2024 - exclusively for small schools in Norfolk

Information

Following the incredibly positive engagement of Norfolk schools in the EEF Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) trial of HFL Education's KS2 Reading Fluency Project, HFL are looking to pilot a KS1 Reading Fluency Project pilot autumn 2024 - exclusively for small schools in Norfolk.

Although places on the EEF trial are now full, standard project rounds will run as usual launching at the start of each term. In response to feedback from schools in Norfolk expressing frustration that the cost and criteria for inclusion in their Reading Fluency Projects can be prohibitive for small schools, HFL are keen to trial an adapted approach for small schools this Autumn term. This pilot will be offered exclusively to Norfolk schools with fewer than 100 pupils.

The cost per school for a small school accessing the model being piloted will be £500 (standard price £850). But, for Norfolk schools who join us for this pilot of this approach in autumn '24, the cost will be reduced to £450 per school.

The KS1 Reading Fluency Project will run across the duration of a term and involves the following CPD elements:

  • A one-day launch: project participants join online sessions and are introduced to the project and provided with training on how to deliver the Reading Fluency Project intervention. The intervention is delivered to a small group of pupils across 8 weeks: 2 x 20 minutes per week.
  • Paired early-project visit: project schools in groups of 6-8 receive a 2-hour remote visit from an HFL Education project adviser.
  • A mid-project twilight: project participants join a two-hour session exploring how the project is going so far, and offering further CPD.
  • A final review: project participants join a two-hour session exploring the impact of the project and consider 'next steps' for schools and individual pupils.

All training is fully remote.

In order to take part in the Small School Pilot of the KS1 Reading Fluency Project, schools will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Have not been allocated a place on the EEF trial of the KS2 Reading Fluency Project
  • Can identify 4-6 pupils across Year 2 and Year 3 who are not on track to meet expected standards in reading and who have passed the phonics screening check

If you are interested in taking part in this pilot, please contact: victoria.groom@norfolk.gov.uk by 24 May 2024. Please note this pilot will only run if there is enough interest, so please do make contact if you are keen to participate.
