For mainstream and special schools, the Pupil Premium grant for financial year 2025 to 2026 will include children recorded in the October 2024 school census who were looked after by a local authority or other state care immediately before being adopted, or who left local authority or other state care on a special guardianship order or child arrangements order (previously known as a residence order). This includes children adopted from state care or equivalent from outside England and Wales.

The current rate for pupils who are recorded as Previously Looked-After Children is £2,570 per pupil.

As within the Using Pupil Premium: Guidance for School Leaders (publishing.service.gov.uk), Pupil Premium funding based on the eligibility of previously looked-after children is part of your school's pupil premium allocation.

The designated teachers at your school have a key role in ensuring the specific educational needs of this cohort are reflected in how you spend your pupil premium plus. Their role includes encouraging parents of previously eligible looked- after children to tell the school if their child is eligible to attract Pupil Premium Plus funding.

The Pupil Premium Plus for Previously Looked-After Children 2024 template letter (Word doc) [237KB] can be sent to parents and guardians to explain this ahead of the Schools and Pupils Census on 3 October 2024.
