Preparing for end of KS2 Statutory Writing Assessment

A series of three sessions to deepen teachers understanding of the end of KS2 Statutory Assessment Frameworks to enable accurate teacher assessment of writing at the end of Year 6.

This training, led by the LA Moderation Manager and moderation team, is for teachers in year 6 who want to improve their understanding of end of KS2 expectations for writing; and for English leads and KS2 practitioners who want to develop a progressive writing curriculum and approach to assessment throughout KS2.

These face-to-face sessions will give participants the opportunity to use exemplification and standardisation material to unpick writing standards at the end of KS2, and apply this understanding to the assessment of their pupils' writing. The sessions are intended to be complementary to the work of the Norwich Writing Project, ensuring teachers and leaders using non-statutory year group moderation grids are able to apply their understanding of the end points of KS2 curriculum in their accurate application of the writing frameworks. Professional discussion and gap tasks will enable teachers to reflect on their curriculum and pedagogy throughout KS2 so that all children are enabled to achieve the standard.

At each event, teachers will be briefed on key messages; use standardisation activities to develop understanding of the EXS and GDS and the threshold between them; so it is vital that teachers attend both dates. There will be opportunities to ask questions about aspects of the framework to clarify understanding and structured gap tasks and discussions will enable application of accurate assessment knowledge. This training will empower teachers and leaders with the tools needed to apply this understanding to their own evidence bases and reflect on changes to curriculum and pedagogy in light of their standardisation conversations.

For teachers in years 3, 4 and 5 and literacy and writing leads, these sessions will be instrumental in developing their understanding of writing progression in KS2.

Exploring the components and composites of effective writing and effective grammar choices in line with the needs of audience and purpose. How drawing upon reading experiences and developing an awareness of the needs of the reader are essential to effective writing at the end of KS2.

Session 2 - Reflecting on writing effectiveness and cohesion: what progress are children making towards the standard and where next

Exploring the components and composites of cohesion and how this enables writing at EXS and GDS. Reflecting on the building blocks of sentence construction and demarcation, paragraphing and structural choices on how to present ideas with a good awareness of the writing's purpose and the needs of the reader. How framework statements work together to support cohesion and ultimately writing effectiveness.

Session 3 - Bringing the strands together: A deep dive into the emerging evidence base and an action plan to secure the standard by the end of June

Table discussions facilitated by school-based moderators and lead moderators from the LA team will support staff to identify areas of embedded learning and reflect upon further evidence and writing opportunities that could secure the standard by June. Teachers will use standardisation and exemplification materials to support this professional dialogue and any resulting action plans.

These sessions are fully funded for all maintained Norfolk schools and for academies who subscribe to Norfolk Statutory Assessment Monitoring Services. Academies who do not subscribe are welcome to book places and will be charged the full cost of £50 per session, per delegate.
