Early Years Inclusion - Developmental Journals

Most children will be able to access and participate in a mainstream setting and make progress through Development Matters statements and the early learning goals through high quality provision which includes effective differentiation of activities.

Where a child appears to be behind expected levels, or where a child's progress gives cause for concern, practitioners may choose to use an alternative monitoring/tracking tool. This will offer an opportunity of recording, celebrating and supporting the smaller steps of progress children make. You may find one of the Early Support Developmental Journals useful if you know or suspect a child is unlikely to progress at the same rate as other children of the same age, whether or not a particular factor or learning difficulty has been identified and given a name.

The Development Journals are resources available from the Council for Disabled Children website (opens new window) - search for 'journal' on their website.
