Guidance to support young people to take a GCSE in their first language
We recommend that you enter young people for first/heritage language GCSEs by the February deadline and, where a young person is fluent and literate in their first language, that they undertake this in Year 10 if possible.
A young person will require an intermediate/Band (Bell Foundation EAL Assessment Framework) level of English to understand the rubric of the questions in English.
You may need to employ an examiner for the oral section of the exam.
GCSEs are available in the following languages:
- Afrikaans - IGCSE
- Arabic
- Bengali
- Chinese (Mandarin)
- French
- German
- Greek (Modern)
- Gujarati
- Hebrew (Modern)
- Hindi: IGCSE
