Free fruit trees for Norfolk schools

FAO: School staff , 3 February 2025 10:28
For Staff

The Norfolk County Council's 1 Million Trees team have a surplus of orchard stock from their Subsidised Tree scheme and would like to offer these to Norfolk schools for planting this season (by 31 March 2025) for free.

There are a limited number orchard packs available on a first come first serve basis and you can apply for multiple packs (although the team may distribute these evenly if there are a significant number of requests to ensure fairness).  The packs contain six heritage trees, selected in pairs to ensure pollination success.  The specific species and type of tree within the packs cannot be guaranteed or tailored, but previous packs have included a mix of apple, plum, pear and cherry trees. The orchard packs also come with tree guards and canes.

The packs will be available to collect from County Hall in March, but please note that the specific date is yet to be confirmed.

To request an orchard pack, please email tree.planting@norfolk.gov.uk by Friday 7 February with the following information:

  • Number of packs you would like.
  • A simple map and description of where you will be planting the orchard trees (please note that the team will need check the location is suitable for tree planting and the location should be easy to identify).  In addition to this, you will need to provide a planting Postcode or Grid Reference.
  • Confirm that you are able to:
  • Collect the trees from County Hall
  • Plant the trees this season (i.e. by March 31 2025)
  • Maintain and look after the trees

If you have any questions, please send them to tree.planting@norfolk.gov.uk and the team will be happy to help.
