Whole school approach to transitions in schools
How can we support staff awareness, confidence and skills?
To be able to support children and young people effectively, we as staff must feel confident in our own knowledge and skills. Please see below some training and CPD opportunities:
General
- Young Minds "Find your feet" webinar about how schools can support children and young people through the change from primary to secondary school.
- Just One Norfolk provides resources to support transitions.
Early years
- Early Years and Childcare Training
- Speech, Language and Communication: Supporting the early years in Norfolk (padlet.com) - provides links to some SLCN environmental audits which can be used to best ensure communication friendly settings.

SEND specific
- NASEN's Whole School SEND offer a range of CPD webinars, leaflets and other information such as supporting successful transitions, transitions for SEND pupils and transition planning for year 11, as well as resource packs including a pack to support KS4 SEND transition.
- Transitions England (autism.org.uk) contains advice about strategies and support that can help during key life transitions.
Specific to children in care or previously in care

Specific to refugee children and young people
- The Healing Classroom offer a range of CPD and resources including videos on how to support refugee children or young people starting school after fleeing war, resources to use when training peer 'buddies' to welcome new refugee and asylum-seeking children or young people to your school and guidance on how to hold an initial meeting with families and gather key information.
